Mt. Elgon is an awe-inspiring East African landmark. With a volcanic base that spans 80km in diameter. Stands as the largest and oldest solitary mountain in the East Africa region, rising over 3,000m tall! Strategically, lies on Uganda and Kenya's borders. It is on the north of Kisumu and west of Kitale. Mount Elgon is a gem that should be on your climbing bucket list. There is more to Mount Elgon. It is the second-highest mountain in Kenya, from Mount Kenya. Additionally,  it is the fourth highest in Africa. Mount Kilimanjaro takes the lead with 5,895 m. Subsequently,  Mount Kenya, 5,199 m, follows in second place. Mount Ruwenzori in Uganda, 5,109 m, takes the third position. While Mount Elgon takes the fourth place, straddles 4,321 m. The mountain has five peaks: Wagagai Peak, 4,321 meters (14,177 ft)) in Uganda. Sudek peak (4,302  meters (14,114 ft)) on the Kenya/Uganda border. Koitoboss Peak, 4,222 meters (13,852 ft)), is a flat-topped basalt column in Kenya. Mubiyi 4,211 meters (13,816 ft)) in Uganda, and Masaba (4,161 meters (13,652 ft))  which is in Uganda.  


There are several routes to the Summit of Mount Elgon, but the most popular is the Chorlim Gate route. We will take the Chorlim Gate Route to Koitoboss Peak on this climbing expedition. The Chorlim Gate route begins at the Chorlim Gate ranger station and follows a well-marked trail to the summit. The hike to the summit takes two to four days, depending on your fitness level.     

 

What to bring to Mt. Elgon Trek 

 

  • Waterproof rucksack with a day pack.
  • Sleeping bag (covering at least three seasons). 
  • Roll mats and insulation pads. 
  • Comfortable hiking boots, light walking trainers, and thongs (flip-flops). 
  • Gaiters (useful when encountering snow), Wooden walking stick/ski pole, Sunglasses.  
  • Sun hat, balaclava or woolen hat, Warm scarf, gloves, mittens, and thermal underwear. 
  • Sweaters/jumpers, anorak/raincoats, water and windproof pants, jackets, t-shirt, and several pairs of socks. 
  • Long-sleeved shirt with collar, small towel, toiletries, and toilet paper. 
  • Sunscreen and lip salve.
